The term 'Black Panther' is usually applied to any large black cat, they tend to be either Jaguar (S.America) or Leopard (Africa/Asia) with a melanistic condition (excessive dark colouration). They are not uniformly back, their spots can usually be distinguished at close quarters or in angled sunlight. There is a subspecis of cat known as the Florida Panther, but this from the American Mountain Lion family and has the same colouration as the N.American Puma. There is no know evidence of this subspecis being melanistic. Keith On 16/10/06, Jean Georges Perrin <jgp@iiug.org> wrote: > Actually, I wondered: is a panther always black?
