Alarm Script INF9.4 Linux
Posted in 2006
Sven's ALARMPROGRAM script on IDS 9.4/Linux stopped being called, so logical logs weren't being backed up. Suggestions about file permissions, execute rights for user informix, and script syntax errors came up empty. The cause emerged when he mentioned temporarily setting LTAPEDEV/TAPEDEV to /dev/null during an upgrade: Art Kagel and others explained LTAPEDEV is read into shared memory only at engine startup (or changed via onmonitor), and /dev/null is a special case where logs are marked backed up/discarded with no alarm call. Fix: restore LTAPEDEV and bounce the instance; Sven planned to do so, though no confirmation is posted.

Hi, My problem is, the alarm script is not called any more. So no logical logs are backuped. I tried to put a mail command in the beginning of the script, so I am able to say it is not called during log change. What might cause the problem? Sven

Hi, Are you shure the file is executable by user informix ? Try su - informix and execute the script by hand. Normally, there is some right problem (maybe not on the file itself, but on the dir). If this is not the case, find out if there was a change in onconfig file. (maybe the ALARMPROGRAM is multiply defined ?) Other reasons I cannot think of. Whoa! How did you change LTAPEDEV and has the engine been bounce since? The value of LTAPEDEV is never accessed from the ONCONFIG file, it is ONLY read from shared memory and it is read into shared memory by the engine at startup. The only way to change LTAPEDEV in memory is to use onmonitor to change its value. If you just edited the ONCONFIG file the engine is still discarding logical logs to /dev/null! Art S. Hi,
If you have rebooted the instance after modifying LTAPEDEV to /dev/null, IDS
will not call the log backup.
Instead, IDS will mark the log immediately as backed up.
You can see this by looking at the output of onstat -l (U-B---- B for
Backup).
If this happens, a reboot with LTAPEDEV set to a dev <> /dev/null will help.

Hi,
My problem is, the alarm script is not called any more.
So no logical logs are backuped.
I tried to put a mail command in the beginning of the script, so I am able
to say it is not called during log change.
What might cause the problem?

Exactly! Setting LTAPEDEV to /dev/null is a special case that tells the IDS instance that you do not care about your logical logs and the engine can discard them as soon as it no longer needs them for transaction rollbacks and fast recovery. So, the logs are not backed up and no notice is sent to the ALARMPROGRAM. Art S. Hi,
I now everything you are talking about.
Now it is running again but there was no bounce.
On Sunday I changed LTAPEDEV from /infbackup/backup to /dev/null, cause all
logs went full and I needed a running machine.
I called ontape -a, and all logs went to /dev/null. I changed back to
/infbackup/... I tried a onmode -l and the log went into the filesystem.
On Monday morning nearly all logs was full again, I cahnged to /dev/null,
using ontape -a and switching back.
Afterwards log backup was not running. Tried a little bit around, suddenly
backup started again.

Exactly! Setting LTAPEDEV to /dev/null is a special case that tells the IDS
instance that you do not care about your logical logs and the engine can
discard them as soon as it no longer needs them for transaction rollbacks and
fast recovery. So, the logs are not backed up and no notice is sent to the
ALARMPROGRAM.

Hi,
My problem is, the alarm script is not called any more.
So no logical logs are backuped.
I tried to put a mail command in the beginning of the script, so I am able
to say it is not called during log change.
What might cause the problem?
