Installation with sudo online (RHEL8)
Posted in 2022
Marc Demhartner could not install Informix 14.10.FC7 and CSDK on RHEL8 through sudo; the installer complained about missing libm and libc. Paul Watson and others suggested sudo bash and non-root installs. Vladimir Kolobrodov asked for a silent install under strace with IATEMPDIR set. Marc succeeded; the likely cause was a too-small /tmp partition.

Hello friends, i have a customer, who only provides a system with a user which is allowed to use "sudo" it is RHEL8 x64 system. I have the problem, that the installer blames about: "Install libm.so.6, libc.so.6" files are there.. i tried to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH already to /usr/lib64 and used "sudo -E" but it does not work. Question: is it possible at all to install informix and CSDK just with sudo? ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------ #Informix
I install with sudo all the time, sudo su -, so I don't think that is the underpinning issue. I can't remember the last time I had direct root access to a server. Under RedHat I thought the files were in /lib64. I am assuming you are installing 64 bit, with 32 bit you will additonal packages, but you knew that :-) Cheers Paul Cheers Paul Paul Watson Oninit LLC +1-913-387-7529 www.oninit.com Oninit® is a registered trademark of Oninit LLC
Haha... thats the thing.. they forbit " sudo su -" :-) ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------

True... so.. i am not jokeing.. they dont let me use "su" as sudo command. So, possible without "su" ? ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------

What does id show when you are 'sudo', if you are root then you probably just need to set the env.
Yes, i thought so, i just wanted to collect some feedback. Maybe a installation without being root is no issue - i wasnt sure, before i always installed informix as root ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------

Hi Marc,
have you tried:
$ sudo bash

You can do a non-root install. The install user is not root obviously, and can't be Informix. The max chunk paths length is (was) smaller than standard install. AFAIR there are some ER limitations as well If you cannot convert between the two installation options and the backups are not interchangeable Note: this was from a few years back so maybe the limitations have changed Cheers Paul
Good trick... indeed that works. But the issue keeps: ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
Marc: As Paul said, you can do a non-root install, but there are limitations on the resulting servers and it cannot upgrade an existing root installation. Art ------------------------------ Art S. I suspect that you are trying to install 32-bit Informix product on a 64-bit system which does not have 32-bit compatibility libraries. Otherwise the installer message does not make sense. ------------------------------ Vladimir Kolobrodov ------------------------------
Definitly 64bit Linux... i am also confused. ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
Hello Marc, which Version did you try to install ? 14.10.FC? Cheers, Markus ------------------------------ Markus Holzbauer ------------------------------
Installer leaves some files in /tmp/ which may give some more hints. Brute force approach would be to run installer in silent mode through "strace", which generates lots of output (up to 300mb, but will be less due to early failure) That can point at component which fails to find the libraries. Something like this (after sudo bash): strace -f /path/to/ids_install -i silent -DLICENSE_ACCEPTED=TRUE -DUSER_INSTALL_DIR=${INFORMIXDIR} > /tmp/strace.out 2>&1 Also, going to the basics, what is the product version you are trying to install, something identifyable, like "IIF.14.10.FC6_165.linux86_64_3.10.0-693.el7.x86_64.tar"? If no information, run md5sub -b /path/to/ids_install and share the hash. Also share output from cat /etc/os-release ------------------------------ Vladimir Kolobrodov ------------------------------
Typo, correct is md5sum -b /path/to/ids_install ------------------------------ Vladimir Kolobrodov ------------------------------

Good idea... one thing which is different... they provided a VM with small /tmp parition so installier gives a warning during start: $./ids_install Preparing to install WARNING: /tmp does not have enough disk space! Attempting to use /root for install base and tmp dir. Extracting the JRE from the installer archive... strace shows: ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------

Thanks! The md5 hash indeed maps into known install media, so it's not corrupted.
strace output does not help much - it looks like interactive install, and at that point it did not reach the point of failure.
It's best to capture full strace output for the silent install:
1. Become "root"
sudo bash
2. set INFORMIXDIR to desired location (preferably empty)
export INFORMIXDIR=/path/to/informix/directory3. make sure you don't have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set. If it is - unset with
unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH
4. You must find (temp) location which has enough disk space, you can create temp directory and communicate it's location to installer, using
export IATEMPDIR=/someplace/idsinstalltmp
5. Assuming that you also have enough disk space for Informix, run
strace -f ./ids_install -i silent -DLICENSE_ACCEPTED=TRUE -DUSER_INSTALL_DIR=${INFORMIXDIR} > /tmp/strace.out 2>&1
In addition to the strace.out - there will be install logs, check $INFORMIXDIR and /tmp immediately after install. There may be some files also left in the IATEMPDIR.
It would make sense to look at these logs first (after checking that there is no $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit, which would be an indication that install failed)
if you still see messages that libm.so, etc were not found (one of the logs will have this message if install failed) then we can try to search the strace.out for more information.

YES, this way worked fine! No issue at all So i think the root cause is the isse with a too small /tmp partition or so? ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
I would think that issue with "missing" system libraries may be something else. If you want to confirm - it's possible to run interactive (console) install after setting IATEMPDIR (without using strace), and check that maybe selected options (if any) cause it. Silent install uses defaults, so there may be something there.Environment variables sometimes can interfere too. > ... worked fine ... So, you were able to install Informix successfully using silent install ? ------------------------------ Vladimir Kolobrodov ------------------------------
Yes, i directly tried the normal way also ./ids_install worked - as normal. So step 2-4 did the trick, but feels like a bug isnt it? Maybe someone can reproduce it? make a /tmp partition with just 300mb ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
> WARNING: /tmp does not have enough disk space ... That's what I would expect to see when there is not enough space in /tmp I don't know if after that installer can select location with insufficient disk space and proceed. All-in-all I am glad that install worked for you.
