Does Informix 9.2 support encrypted data? Can I store encrypted data in the database, if so how does Informix handle this data? Thank you in advance
Yes and no. You could store encrypted data but you would not be able to query those columns. On the other hand you are using 9.2x so you could get an encryption datablade. On the third hand I have not seen one yet. Art S. Kagel ASA GSI wrote: > > Does Informix 9.2 support encrypted data? Carrying on from what Art said... You could use (with Foundation.2000) Java-in-the-database and standard encryption libraries from people such as IAIK (http://jcewww.iaik.tu-graz.ac.at/) to manage the process of reading/writing the data in and out of the columns. You would be able to use the Java UDRs to abstract the interaction with the data from the 'user'. Of course anytime you put something like that between you and your data performance will take a hit (since you are introducing more processing), but then I suppose it depends on what your goals are... You could do the same with C UDRs if you had the skills (which I lack) in C necessary to do so. For what it is worth in the past I have found that C does perform significantly better than Java for encryption type work (but that was quite some time ago, the gap may be a lot less now with the newer JVMs...). You can get more info on J/Foundation (the part of Foundation.2000 that provides the embedded JVM in the database) from: http://www.informix.com/idn-secure/Java/WebPages/ntier/jfoundation/overview. html HTH ben.
