HDR Connectivity (IDS 10.0)
Posted in 2007
Dileep couldn't start HDR between two Linux IDS 10.00.UC4X2 servers: both sides logged "DR: Cannot connect to secondary/primary server". Suggestions included that sqlhosts pointed the listeners at localhost instead of the real interface (check netstat -atn), setting up trust via ~informix/.rhosts or /etc/hosts.equiv, removing /etc/hosts aliases, using the correct INFORMIXSERVER names in onmode -d, and testing a plain dbaccess connection. Fixing sqlhosts and trust wasn't enough; the real cause was a firewall - traffic from secondary back to primary was blocked. Clearing the iptables rules on the secondary made HDR work.

Hi,
I am using IDS version 10.00.UC4X2 on linux and is setting up HDR for the
first time. I get the "cannot connect" messages on both the primary and
secondary servers.
I have various network settings as follows. Did I miss anything?
Thanks for your help,
Dileep

Hi, Dileep,

Just do 'netstat -atn', and you will see.
Also, don't forget to create ~informix/.rhosts or /etc/hosts.equiv

Hi,
Thanks all for your responses. I configured /etc/hosts.equiv and
~informix/.rhosts to contain + to accept all servers, in both the machines.
I also modified sqlhosts as follows.
primary
-------
server onsoctcp localhost server_tcpprimary onsoctcp <local machine name> hdr_tcp
secondary onsoctcp <secondary/remote machine name> hdr_tcp
secondary
----------
server onsoctcp localhost server_tcpsecondary onsoctcp <local machine name> hdr_tcp
primary onsoctcp <primary/remote machine name> hdr_tcp
After this sqlhost change, 'netstat -atn' shows listeners started on other
interfaces like ...
tcp 0 0 172.27.27.3:2007 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
2007 is my hdr port number.
I still get the connection errors though. I tried with removing aliases in
/etc/hosts also.
I run the 'onmode -d primary secondary' command when primary IDS is in online
mode and 'onmode -d secondary primary' command when the secondary is in the
'Fast Recovery' mode. Is it ok?
The errors are:
09:30:26 DR: new type = primary, secondary server name = SecondaryMP
09:30:33 Dynamically allocated new virtual shared memory segment (size 8192KB)
09:31:27 DR: Cannot connect to secondary server
09:31:27 DR: Turned off on primary server
09:31:31 DR: Cannot connect to secondary server
09:31:31 DR: Turned off on primary server
and
17:19:50 DR: new type = secondary, primary server name = PrimaryMP
17:19:50 DR: Trying to connect to primary server = PrimaryMP
[The command 'onmode -d secondary primary' returns immediately]
Thanks,
Dileep
Hi,
I did not try a setup with different ports for HDR than for IDS itself, so I
am not sure if this will work.
My idea of HDR was always that the second parameter for onmode -d was the
machine name (as an alias in /etc/hosts or DNS) and not the informixserver
value.
So, you should try to call
onmode -d primary <machine_name secondary server>and
onmode -d secondary <machine_name primary server>

Hi,
HDR just need to see the secondary server. Just like you would do to connect
to another informixserver.
The both sqlhosts ( on primary and secondary informix server ) must to have
its lines on sqlhosts file.
so if you want to make the informix server "mickey" on hostsname "disney"
works, you would have on sqlhosts file
mickey ipcshm disney mickey
mickey_tcp onsoctcp disney mickey_tcp
considering /etc/services in the example above
mickey_tcp 1526/tcp
and now the configuration of informix server "thor" on hostsname "marvel"
thor ipcshm marvel thor
thor_tcp ipcshm marvel thor_tcp
considering /etc/services in the example above
thor_tcp 1527/tcp
You need just one more line in each sqlhosts file , so they must to be like
this:
in disney machine
mickey ipcshm disney mickey
mickey_tcp onsoctcp disney mickey_tcpthor_tcp ipcshm marvel thor_tcp
and in marvel machine
thor ipcshm marvel thor
thor_tcp ipcshm marvel thor_tcp
mickey_tcp onsoctcp disney mickey_tcp
and /etc/services in both machines:
mickey_tcp 1526/tcpthor_tcp 1527/tcp
After make the trusted connection between machines and archive and restore
sincronizing, you just execute de onmode -d using only informixserver names
so, in primary server
disney:/>onmode -d primary thor_tcp
and in secondary machine
marvel:/>onmode -d secondary mickey_tcp
Just like that
Good luck !!!

4GB as goes for all 32-bit OS'es
Varies a bit per unix flavour but on a GNU/Linux server
you will have approx,. 2 -3 GB to allocate for IDS shared memory.
1GB should be reserved for the linux kernel.

Hi Dileep,
Check if you can connect to primary server from the secondary server host.
When Primary server is online, try connecting to it using dbaccess from
secondary server host.
You could also try using different port # for primary and secondary
servers.

Hi,
Thanks all for your responses. I configured /etc/hosts.equiv and
~informix/.rhosts to contain + to accept all servers, in both the
machines.
I also modified sqlhosts as follows.
primary
-------
server onsoctcp localhost server_tcpprimary onsoctcp <local machine name> hdr_tcp
secondary onsoctcp <secondary/remote machine name> hdr_tcp
secondary
----------
server onsoctcp localhost server_tcpsecondary onsoctcp <local machine name> hdr_tcp
primary onsoctcp <primary/remote machine name> hdr_tcp
After this sqlhost change, 'netstat -atn' shows listeners started on other
interfaces like ...
tcp 0 0 172.27.27.3:2007 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
2007 is my hdr port number.
I still get the connection errors though. I tried with removing aliases in
/etc/hosts also.
I run the 'onmode -d primary secondary' command when primary IDS is in
online
mode and 'onmode -d secondary primary' command when the secondary is in
the
'Fast Recovery' mode. Is it ok?
The errors are:
09:30:26 DR: new type = primary, secondary server name = SecondaryMP
09:30:33 Dynamically allocated new virtual shared memory segment (size
8192KB)
09:31:27 DR: Cannot connect to secondary server
09:31:27 DR: Turned off on primary server
09:31:31 DR: Cannot connect to secondary server
09:31:31 DR: Turned off on primary server
and
17:19:50 DR: new type = secondary, primary server name = PrimaryMP
17:19:50 DR: Trying to connect to primary server = PrimaryMP
[The command 'onmode -d secondary primary' returns immediately]
Thanks,
Dileep

Hi, The problem was related to network connectivity. Primary was able to connect to the secondary, but not the other way. I was able to ping each other, but traceroute was giving error while running from the primary. After clearing the ip tables entries in secondary, using the /sbin/iptables command, HDR worked. Thanks for all responses, Dileep
