ACE and ASCII
Posted in 1992
A client of mine is writing a short application, a few reports. The data is not only derived from tables, but also from ascii files. First he loaded the data, ran the report and then destroyed the tables again. I recommended the new ASCII READ-Feature of ACE, and it works well, but the name of the dummy database is causing me pain, because on every machine there is another database with another name. I RTFMed a while and found the database ASCII, and i tried: (the file passwd is a version of /etc/passwd with ":" at the end) 1 DATABASE ascii END 2 3 define 4 ascii uname char(8), upasswd char(8), uid integer, gid integer, 5 kommentar char(30), home char(50), shell char(30) 6 end 7 8 read "passwd" delimiter ":" order by uname asc 9 end 10 11 format every row end This doesn't work Output: The reading of the database will now begin. The reading of the database has finished. Database not selected yet. See error number -349. Creating an empty database tralala on every machine does the job: Replace line 1 with: 1 DATABASE tralala END What's going on there, am I blind or can't I read the manual? Or is it a buglet? Well, I can live with it, but it was sort of embarassing for me... but my client still trusts me :-) TIA, hope to hear from you soon :-) -svb -- Sebastian v.
