Snazzy Unique Vicuna? :) American slang - Sports Utility Vehicle. For UK consumption, it's the competition to the Range Rover and the Land Rover Discovery. Basically, big (in the case of Excursion, extremely big) vehicles, usually with 4WD (hmm, four-wheel drive) capability, and actually rather comfortable. Also extremely intimidating to anybody driving anything smaller. And seldom if ever driven off-road, which is what they are nominally for. Even allowing that a US gallon is smaller than a UK (Imperial) gallon (there are less than 4 litres to the US gallon, but around 4.4 litres to the UK gallon), the fuel efficiency on SUVs is frightening. The Excursion has a choice of three engines (5.4 litre V8, 6.8 litre V10, 7.3 litre V8!) and mileage in the range (guess - the http://www.fordvehicles.com web site is not forthcoming about this) in the 12-16 mpg range. That's why it has a 44 gallon tank. And these sorts of figures are why American's cringe at the thought of fuel at $2.00 per gallon. Totally ludicrous; there's only 38.4 cents tax on that in California! Americans should be given a dose of European reality on fuel prices. How much is the cheapest fuel in the UK for 4 litres? $6.00? That would scare SUVs off the road (and do a lot of environmental good too)! -- Yours, Jonathan Leffler (Jonathan.Leffler@Informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h> Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- http://www.perl.com/CPAN "I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!"

That's why it has a 44 gallon tank. <on soapbox> Sorry about the off-topic post, but Ford pushes my buttons on this one. People tell me actual mileage runs between 6-10 mpg. When I first saw the Excursion, I just shook my head. It's like Ford was saying to themselves, "We want to make money by depleting Earth's resources as fast as we can. We already don't have to meet any strict environmental standards like cars do. What can we at Ford do to make this happen?" They did a great job :-( <getting off soapbox> James Ferrill

They did a great job :-( Sounds good, actually the Excursion is Ford's answer to people telling them they'd rather buy a Chevy Suburban than an Expedition because the former has more storage capacity with all the seats installed. Actually, the environmental impact is minimal since no one is fool enough to actually BUY one of these monsters. In my town where Expeditions are rampant (sure glad I turned mine in before they became pedestrian fare ;-) there is only one Excursion. We loved our Expedition, but also bemoaned the lack of storage, and only did not trade for another when the lease ran out because my wife was afraid our new baby would splat if dropped from so high up!
