Licensing at Informix 12 workgroup
Posted in 2014
A user asked how Informix 12 Workgroup Edition "Limited Use" socket licensing works on a single-socket, 8-core Intel box, and whether a secondary (RSS/SDS) server needs its own license. Replies noted PVU-based pricing is the usual route, but Art Kagel confirmed the LU Sockets metric is still sold (~$15k/socket): it's charged per populated socket regardless of core count, valid on 1-4 socket boards, with Workgroup capped at under 16 CPU VPs, and no extra license is needed for up to two secondaries if they aren't accessed while the primary is online. Links to Carlton Doe's edition/licensing article were given; the poster said the answer was clear.

Hello, I'm not sure if it's the right place to ask this, but I leave the question... Does anyone know how a Workgroup LU licensing works? Objectively I have two questions and they're Related to One Cpu Intel box woth 8 cores - Is it licensed for 1 socket only in spite of cores? since it's only one socket installed -Do I have the chance to use only one lincense if I use RSS or SDS? I'm pretending leave the other server as passive and not for query. Thanks in advanced
From the IBM Sales Site CPU's for Work Group are base on PVU. I've not seen a socket license in a very long time. The best answer is to talk to your IBM Rep or IBM VAR. A quick review: the PVU per core is about 70 for an Intel (Processor Model 6500-6599 or 7500-7599 1 or 2 Socket) so you would have to do the math. core * PVU * PVU Cost = Total 8*70*$145=$81,200 for license and 12 month support As for the secondary (RSS or SDS) I'm not sure, use to be the HDR was one socket (which became core). I strongly suggest calling your sales rep or VAR to get the proper information and costing. Eric B. This link may help you: http://omtco.eu/references/ibm/ibm-informix-product-editions-metrics-and-licensi ng-restrictions/ An excerpt: "The number of cores per socket is not taken into account in the calculation formula but is relevant to licensing as it is limited to 4 cores per socket. This metric imposes a limitation on the hardware: it may only be used on a physical server with a maximum of four physical sockets (and a maximum of four cores per socket)." Ideally, you'll probably want to switch over to using PVU's - that seems to be the direction that IBM is pushing towards (although it may or may not be more cost effective for your installation). To the best of my knowledge, licenses are only required for RSS's that have active clients; I'm not sure about SDS, but I would think that guideline would apply to them as well. -Justin > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of P > RAFAEL PADILLA > Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2014 10:43 AM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: Licensing at Informix 12 workgroup [32666] > > Hello, > I'm not sure if it's the right place to ask this, but I leave the > question... > > Does anyone know how a Workgroup LU licensing works? > Objectively I have two questions and they're Related to One Cpu Intel box > woth > 8 cores > - Is it licensed for 1 socket only in spite of cores? since it's only one > socket installed > -Do I have the chance to use only one lincense if I use RSS or SDS? > I'm pretending leave the other server as passive and not for query. > > Thanks in advanced > > > ************************************************************************** > ***** > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum.
Workgroup Edition LU Sockets License Metric is valid for systems mother boards with one to four processor sockets. The license is per socket regardless of how many processor chips are actually installed or how many cores are provided by each installed processor chip. Workgroup Edition is limited, without regard to the particular license, to using fewer than 16 CPU VPs for all instances running on the licensed system. If your SDS, HDR, or RSS secondary is not access while the primary is online then there is no additional license required for the secondary. You are limited to two secondary nodes of any type. Eric: Limited Use Sockets License for Workgroup Edition is still available. I have a client who just purchased an LU Sockets license last month. Rough cost is a bit over $15,000US per socket. Thank you for this. I didn't see it on the IBM site and haven't used Work Group in a while either. It does seem crazy IBM wouldn't have that out there on the site. This is where I get all of my base costing when I need quick budget numbers. From a quick numbers review it would have push management into the lap of another vendor. Art as always thank you for keeping me straight. Eric B. Carlton Doe's Edition review lists the license metrics available for each Edition as well as the feature restrictions: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/ Because it's on Developer Works, it is not the "Official" listing but it is authoritative and I haven't seen it lag changes by more than a week or two.
