Update Text

How do I update a Text field? I have IDS2000 on Red Hat 6.2. I wan to do it from perl. I read through the Informix SQL reference and it says that you can update a TEXT field but you cannot use it in a SET statement of an UPDATE. Is this true? Are there was around this?
