How can you tell that ontape is running?
Posted in 1998
Hi,
I have responsibility for a system that has no full-time DBA and I'd
like to put together a 'cron-ish' script to check whether the database
is happy.
I was wondering if anyone can help me find out whether an 'ontape -c'
is actually doing anything? The system is Sun Solaris 2.6, with 7.23UC4.
Firstly, when ontape is started it gives its 'Please mount tape and press
Return to continue ...' message. Unfortunately, it doesn't say 'Working'
after the Return, so either none or many Returns tend to get pressed.
Secondly, I can't seem to determine from syssessions (or anywhere else)
the difference in the status of the ontape process between,
1) waiting for Return,
2) running happily,
3) tape full and screaming for it to be changed.
Is the only way to look at syslogs, and if more than 3 are full, guess
that there's a problem?
Many thanks for any and all assistance,
Andy.
