OK, in general if the LAN/WAN or the remote host machine is down attempts to connect or query existing connections will fail quickly with an error. If the remote host is up and the network is up but the database server on the remote is down then connections and queries may tend to hang. For connection attempts, using the EXEC SQL CONNECT, ESQL/C command, there are two environment variables that control timeouts and can prevent hanging. For queries to existing connections to an engine that has gone down there is nothing you can do except to set your own alarm code, close the connection and try to reconnect. These hangs will eventually time out but that takes too long for most applications. Art S. Kagel
