New utilities: dbspace-pages.sh and monitor-space.sh

Greetings, Family.
Sorry I've been so quiet these last couple of months. I've been bogged
down. (As if that ever stopped Art or Jonathan! Harrumph! ;-)
I have just uploaded a new utility set to the IIUG archives. Walt
installed it as "monitor_space" under the heading of "Database
Administration Utilities". (For some reason, he insists on replacing
my "-" with "_".) As is my wont (poetic twerp, ain't he? :) the heart
of it is is wrapped awk script.
What's there?
- dbspace-pages.sh : A replacement for my previous shell utility,
dbspace-space.sh; the newer one uses awk to massage the output
of "onstat -d". Otherwise, the output is identical to that of
dbspace-space.sh . Note that dbspace-space.sh is staying the
archives.
- monitor-space.sh : A shell script that calls dbspace-pages.sh and
isues warning messages (to stdout) about any dbspace that is
overfull. The default boundary is 95%, though this is a command
line option. In case you have a couple of dbspaces that are always
nearly full but will never fill further - like a dbspace for your
logs - there is another command line option to ignore a list of
dbspaces.
- monitor-space.cron : A template shell script that you MUST edit to
customize for you environment. You see, monitor-space.sh generates
the warnings but you, the DBA, don't want to have to remember to run
it, with its tedious options. Well, if you edit monitor-space.cron,
you can set up a cron job to monitor the space whenever you feel
like it. Monitor-space.cron runs monitor-space.sh and captures the
output. If there are any warnings of nearly full dbspaces, monitor-
space.cron mails those warnings to whoever you set up to receive
said warnings.
- monitor-space.txt - Documentation to describe all of the above in
excruciating detail.
It is all rolled up into a shell archive named monitor-space.shar.
If you use it, you can anticipate space problems well before they
happen. Get bonus beer from your boss!

Less likely to give trouble on older or non-mainstream OS's worldwide. It wasn't that long ago that I abandonded 8.3. Don't feel bad -- I do it to all files, including those submitted by Art and Jonathan. :-) Walt. -- Walt Hultgren Software Repository Manager International Informix Users Group Mailto:software@iiug.org -- HTTP://www.iiug.org/
