Informix PROBLEM, error in distribution diskette?, HELP, poor csupport
Posted in 1993
I've installed and maintained many different Informix databases on SCO Xenix and Unix boxes without problem. Last year I recommended a church in my area buy Informix to develop some custom programs they needed. They did so at my recommendation. Now I am almost sorry... I had a small problem with the distribution set when I installed the software in that when I generate a default report from any table in is generated with a little garbage in the source - this includes the DEMO STORES DATABASE that comes with the software. Well, I called the VAR they bought the software from and he called (I think) Informix. Anyway, after several calls we got no action. I gave up - after all they could work with the generated code by just deleting and hand-typing a field name into the code. No one on-site was able to program Informix 4GL code at the time... Now I have a good reason to develop 4GL code (the US government is expecting them to keep giving records). Anyway, the 4GL RDS that came with it will NOT compile a form. I get an error on a compile - I choose to edit the error file and it pulls up a BLANK file (*.err). This file should show the code plus have the errors commented... I've used the software on lots of machines before... Anyway, after I notice the .err file is empty I abort the edit and it says the file is unreadable (check permissions). I checked them and it has 0666 permissions (SCO Xenix). In fact, the editor will pull them up fine. So I tried calling informix - and was told SPEND $2000 for support or learn to live with it. First, they spent only $995 for the software. Second, they haven't even had it installed - so it should be supported! Either way - it is an error in the distribution from the supplier and I believe it should be corrected. I CAN COMPILE THESE FORMS FROM THE COMMAND LINE SO THE COMPILER WORKS - THEY MENU'S ARE JUST GOOFED UP. If you have any advice as to what might be causing this or might have seen such an error before, please either give me a mail message, reply in this group, or phone me. Thank you for your help! I must say - if this is the way INFORMIX supports it's customers I will think seriously before recommending them again. I've purchased several small and large informix packages from them in the past year or two and will think seriously about recommending them based on their service (which I've thankfully not had to use until now). I realize this newsgroup is read at INFORMIX and that those that respond on the network are some of the most informed people I've seen. Please give me any advice you might be able to.
