Hi All, I joined this list a couple of weeks back and have found it interesting with many useful tips. NO RAID 5 ??? Two days ago we just went live with a new NT4 server running IDS7.31. This server has two RAID5 disk arrays for the database and the logs. What issues are we going to run into with RAID5 that lead to exclamations of "NO RAID 5" (Obnoxio)?? So far everything runs fine and very fast. Regards, Bryce Stenberg. Thanks for answering! One of the issues about RAID5 is that media degradation can occur in "unused" parts of the disk space which is only discovered during another disk failure and rebuild with catastrophic results. If there is a background media scan built into the RAID (as opposed to an offline scan which means you won't run it!) then you can pretty well rule that risk out. Also, a caching front-end (ECC, mirrored and BBU protected) will hide the worst aspects of the write penalty. So, you might well be getting reasonable mileage from your RAID5. However, if you don't have all the protection mechanisms then all will be fine until you hit trouble. Otherwise go with the flow. 0+1 GB "Bryce Stenberg" <bryce@hrnz.co.nz> wrote in message news:8so82u$pfh$1@news.xmission.com... > > Hi All, > > I joined this list a couple of weeks back and have found it interesting with > many useful tips. > > NO RAID 5 ??? > Two days ago we just went live with a new NT4 server running IDS7.31.
