Cross instance query performance tuning

I have two instances of Informix running. On some limited situations I need to access a database running on the second instance from the first instance utilizing the database@aliasname:tablename <mailto:database@aliasname:tablename> syntax. I'm having severe performance problems with these queries. If I run the query directly on the instance I'm trying to access remotely, the query runs very quickly so it isn't the query itself - it's just executing cross instances where I'm taking all my performance hit. Is there anything I can tune/do to speed that up?
What is the query?
Run the query with SET EXPLAIN ON in dbaccess
what do you get?
