The following is valid from version 7.x on and it works also on 9.x. Note that in versions 9.4+ (I'm not completely sure about the
subversion) there are some additional settings you could use to set a character set.
You should also set DB_LOCALE environment variable. Value is a string of a form: "LL_CC.<codeset>" where CC is 2-letter ISO country
code, LL is a two-letter language code and <codeset> is character set code. DB_LOCALE should match the locale of a database, you are
trying to use.
For example "cs_cz.8859-2" stands for Chech Republic, Chech language and ISO 8859-2 (ISO Latin 2) character set. Another example
could be "en_us.8859-1" which stands for English language, United States and ISO 8859-1 (ISO Latin 1) character set. For a full list
of available values search the documentation.
The same can be done with CLIENT_LOCALE environment variable, but it is usually unnecessary.
