RE: SPL and Tuxedo

Stefan, Tuxedo is what you get when you cross client-server with a transaction = processing monitor: client-server on steroids. The big difference is = that rather than generating sql on the client side and firing it off to = server, the developer writes sql (usually embedded in esql/c) as a = 'service' that sits in shared memory on the server. For instance you = can have a service called balance which is essentially select balance = from account where account_id =3D :parameter; statement prepared, cursor = ready and waiting. The client fires off a message to tuxedo which routes it to a server. = There can be any number of these, and the message's destination can be = determined by its contents: data dependant routing. The message is a = service request and parameters to that service, in this case an = account_id. Because these services are always in shared memory they are very fast, = because requests are queued by the T.P. monitor, response time is = predictable and because of data dependant routing the same code will = work on one or a dozen machines.=20 Services on physically different machines can be stacked oo style and = coordinated within transactions controlled by the client. The same = service that updates an account balance can be used to debit an account = in Sydney $100 and credit one in Rekyavik $100. Your service program can call a stored procedure, there is not = restriction on that but you are only creating an overhead for yourself; = you use services in the enhanced client-server model the same way you = use stored procedures in the trad odbc environment. If you write your services in ansi sql then you have an application that = is database independant. If you start calling stored procedures then you = loose that.=20 HTH. I don't know anything about Tuxedo, but I must tell a couple of developers sth. about performance tuning and I'm quite sure that tey will try to use SPL. TIA Stefan stefan@weideneder.de
