I've been with a client that has made the move over time from SE 2.x to 4.x to 5.x to (very recently) 7.x In general the transitions went well with some recoding issues in 4GL. Some of these were mandatory (usually poor coding to start with) and some were simply newer, better ways to do things that were taken advantage of over time. >Seems that the problems with upgrading to version 7.x are: >* Performance : (Online only?), should I be looking at upgrading my >SCO box? My guess is that you will see a performance improvement provided you stick with SE. I remember a big improvement when they went from 2.x to 4.x and not too much past that. No comment if you choose Online, it depends a lot on your size, and that type of work you put the DB Engine through. >* rowids - some of our programs use rowid references for updates. True, although some would argue that rowid's are not a good thing anyway, so dont use them. Personally, I like them in controlled development environments >* Buggy versions of Informix for SCO 3.2? Our 4.x had problems and we didn't keep it long, but these wont be a problem for you as you should probably go straight to 7.x. Informix probably aren't going to do much with 3.2, as Open Server 5 is pretty well established, and version 7.x is strongly recommended to run on Open Server 5 by Informix themselves (I'm not sure it's even supported on 3.2). In any case, we've had zero problems with moving from 5.x to 7.x and SCO 3.2 to 5.0.2, so you're not on virgin ground. >--------------------------------------- >The application is a sales order processing system developed in >INFORMIX-4GL using the RDS - all code is compiled as pcode. Very similar to my client. Performance can be an almost infinite variable. If you're having problems, get back to some of the gurus in this group and try a few things.
