I have a solution. It is a JET engine/ODBC c r a p feature (not sure which), where the query cannot be converted correctly to Informix SQL. The columns are in the select list which is why I was so confused. I got the answer from Impy who sent me a post from a reply to a MS 97 query where sorting on non-index fields was causing this error. The answer, well a work round, is to make the query a snapshot and not dynaset recordset. I haven't got time to really fume and start ripping peoples heads off but I will not forget! Bummer! [Throw away M$Access .... ;-)] Frankly, I think it would be more productive to throw away M$ period.
