Re: Performance Tuning

Performance tuning is a circular process that can be described as: Measure what is happening Implement a change Repeat these steps iteratively for the life of the system. Tuning should include numerical benchmarks such as "transaction time" (with avg, std dev, mean, median, mode, min, max, and count) and an analysis of where this time is being spent (client, network, server (os or database)) or when the sample is taken (end of quarter or low-load times) or for whom it matters (OLTP or analytical users, VIPs, other automated systems), for example. You would do well to buy Liz Suto's book on Informix Performance Tuning (information available on the IIUG web site at http://www.iiug.org ), to read TFM "Performance Guide", and to see Joe Lumbley's chapter on tuning in his "DBA's Survival Guide." Informix training offers two classes specifically in IDS performance tuning (class #403, and the new Masters Workshop #729.) They provide an excellent starting point. For more information on scheduling and availability of these classes see the Informix web site at http://www.informix.com/training . Finally, remember that the biggest gains come from tuning the application (cartesian queries) and the database (indexes), not the engine. Good luck!
