RE: Onbar and Storage Manager Backup to different server mpossible?
Posted in 2005
I hesitated to respond to this thread since I am not an onbar expert. I assisted in setting this up on IDS7.31 and Solaris 8 a few years ago. We have since moved to Solaris 9 IDS 9.40.FC5. We routinely do imported restores from our production instance to a test box. We had some very similar problems and they ended up being ISM setup issues. When you do ism_show -admins, do you have an administrator for both the host and target machine listed there (username@hostname)? Once a month, we oninit -i the instance on the test box and lay the onbar of production down on it. Our process as memory serves:
take production onbar backup
import these volumnes into the ISM catalog on the target machine
oninit -i the target database copy the oncfg and ixbar files to the target informix dir
load necesssary tapes and mount needed devices
start onbar cold restore
bring the database up when restore is complete.
Once we got past the initial setup problems, the process runs pretty smoothly. In this case, we found informix support to be helpful.

OK - I don't remember coming across the term used for that purpose
(certainly not sufficiently routinely for it to have sunk in), so I've
been asleep. Must be the Rip van Winkle effect - another 21 years and
I'll wake up.

Again, I've not seen that as the description - again, I must have been
dozing at all the wrong points.

OK; so you've contacted IBM Tech Support and asked for a bug to be
created, clear stating exactly where there is a discrepancy between the
documentation and the actual product behaviour?

The sqlhosts file is the same? The dbservernames are the same? If the
sqlhosts files are the same, are you using localhost as the machine
name? Or is that what you meant by 'except for the hostname'? Did you
copy the various BAR-related log files - which go by names such as
ixbar*, I believe? Did you make all the necessary changes (if there are
any) in the ON-Bar configuration files.

I am sorry that my attempt to understand your problem annoyed you. I
was merely trying to obtain enough information from you to have a
chance of helping you. I knew that my answer would, of itself, be of
little value - but you did call upon me when, unasked, I'd have kept
quiet, knowing that I have little of use to say.

I suspect Martin gave you (at least some of) the extra information that
you need.
