How to use Perform to associate 6 tables?

Keywords: Perform Message-ID: <1992Feb2.000100.15169@skyking.uucp> Date: 2 Feb 92 00:01:00 GMT Organization: Skyking Enterprises I am back to using Informix Sql for another medium size application after over a year away from it. I'm kind of rusty and need some assistance from you dbgurus. I am using INFORMIX-SQL Version 2.10.03K. I do not have access to any of the other FINE Informix products at my current location. I have 6 tables in one db. One is kind of a personnel record. The second is a department table with department numbers, manager, and department names. The third table is about office space, it contains cube number, twisted pair cable number, and current patch-panel connection for the 8 ports available. The fourth table is for group-id and group names. Number five contains all the information about the host that serves this user. The 6th table is a history recording mechanism for tracking changes made to the entire db and is joined with a particular user's personnel table entry. Tables 1 and 6 appear on screen1. When I do a query on the user's logname, the history table will also display the first history record for this user. All's fine with the world so far. Now, what I want to happen is when I change to screen2, I want the pertinent information about the department THIS person is in to be auto- matically displayed. Same with screen3 which has his office space info I don't want to have to do another search on his cube number (which is already displayed on his personnel screen) in order to bring up the info on his office. And so on, and so on. I have tried to make personnel the master of all the other tables, but I got errors about them not being linked, so I linked one of them (I think it was the cube table) with the cube_name. And then I tried the logname (which both tables have a field for). But no luck. With one of my attempts, I did get it to compile without complaint, but when I ran it and query'd on an existing record, when I pressed "d" for detail, I got an empty cube table screen and a complaint about "no records found" (and there is a record in the cube table for this user). It is suppose to give me the history table first because I listed it as the first table for personnel to be the master of: personnel master of user_history; personnel master of cube; I hope I have been clear enough that someone out there can understand my problem and point me towards a workable solution (given the tools I am restricted to). thx..... -- J.C.
