Using views

What have been people's experiences using views? What are the pitfalls in using them? Their worst limitations? Their best use? Or are they such a maintenance nightmare that they shouldn't even be considered? What guidelines would you advise in their use?

I've never tried to do any UPDATE, be careful. The trouble for me is that you can't use the UNION operator in the definition of a view.
