Loading DBFs to Informix
Posted in 1999
User sought a fast method to load DBF files into Informix without writing custom DBF readers. Solutions suggested included: using MS-Access with ODBC as a gateway, converting DBFs to fixed-length text files, using Delphi Client/Server's data movement utility supporting multiple databases including DBF and Informix, and WinSQL tool. No single definitive solution was identified; multiple third-party tools were recommended.

=A0 Hi, Is there a good and FAST way to load DBF files into Informix without having to write own DBF file reader ? Any pointers on such utils would be GREATLY appreciated. Maciek. =A0 =A0
This is not elegant, and may not be speedy, but you can use MS-Access as a poor mans gateway. Import the DBF file and use and ODBC connection to push the data to Informix. No. The DBF format is well-documented, however, and there are tools available on shareware sites and such that can be made to dump DBFs out to fixed-length text files. Other than that, I recommend Frank's solution, or a variant thereof. If you have access to Delphi Client/Server tool then there is an easy way. In it is included a littile utility that will allow you to move data between all data sources supported by BDE (Borland Database Engine), namely Informix,Oracle,Sybase,DB/2,MS SQL, Paradox, DBF, Access etc. Besides pumping data (blobs included), it will also create tables for you. Very easy to use, and best tool to do it (in my oppinion). ============================== Slobodan Zorko Alfatec Group 10000 Zagreb, Praska 5, CROATIA email: slobodan.zorko@zg.tel.hr begin 666 Sobodan Zorko.vcf M0D5'24XZ5D-!4D0-"E9%4E-)3TXZ,BXQ#0I..EIO<FMO.U-O8F]D86X-"D9. Hi, I have written a tool that can help you do that. It is called WinSQL and you can download that from http://www.imranweb.com/freesoft. Make sure you get the professional version of WinSQL. Thanks, Imran.
