Because SE stores its tables in Unix files, it can mark deleted rows as available, but I have never seen it spontaneously release file space. The deleted rows will be reused before the file size is INcreased, but the only way to DEcrease the file size is to rebuild the table using one of the several methods mentioned earlier.
