I can remember going to Arizona back in early 90 or 91, and would not have found a single 4GL or Informix job. The idea of DBA was totally unheard of. But this recent surge of 4GL work might be from all the people with experience moving on to other products, and 4GL is left unattended. > > risky with other vendors' products, so Informix is not alone in this--which is > > precisely why I'm avoiding New Era. Now, as you say, it's not worth holding > your breath for NewEra's future. ;-) > Wingz - gread product, crappy platform. The Apple is a niche product, and was too slow for serious computer people when Wingz was out. Only people I knew who had it were bean counters, and people who use computers for furniture. Bring Wingz back in Java, and you may have an interesting product. :-) It'll still be slow for the majority of platforms, but it might be fast on an NC. 4GL-GX - Windows wasn't/isn't ready for character-based apps or a command-line world. Gates will continue to bundle in command.com, the lousiest command-line interpreter in the history of humanity, and the castrated O/S called ( now ) Win95. Compared to a Java O/S, doesn't Windows look awefully silly? We already know how silly it looks compared to UNIX, as an O/S. It would be so nice if there was some other O/S that could run Win95 software--or software like it. Java may just be the answer--even if Tcl/Tk is giving Xwindows a last reprieve. I know many people who code 4GL without ever exploiting the power of UNIX. but I could not imagine coding 4GL on Win95 or DOS without a UNIX shell. Even with something like MKS Tool Kit DOS still sucks--it's just not the same. ( Caldera is soon to offer their own DOS BTW ) NewEra - Forces me to do it one way - code here pay here please. If I see it on the download page and the price drops I may give it a look but I'll never tell... :-) -- Tim Schaefer \\\\|// tschaefe@mindspring.com (6 6) ------------------------oOOo---( )---o00o--------- Liberty: http://www.lp.org Informix: http://www.iiug.org --------------------------------------------------
