(I am using Sybase 4.9.1 in anheterogenious UNIX environment) So are you looking for info on fully distributed databases w/ replicated data, etc. etc. Or, are you looking for info on CLient Server stuff? There are many technical journals which deal with the research issues of distributed databases but I don't think this is what you want. If you want info on Sybase and others try RDBMS magazine and Database Programmer magazine. Both have had articles on setting up and using Sybase and other systems in client server arrangements. They also cover front end tools and some server hardware. Let me know if you need addresses of these magazines.
