execute a prepared stmt

Hi, could someone fill in the blank for me?? sprintf(sql_text, "select count(*) into :cnt from arc where blahblah"); EXEC SQL PREPARE astmt from :sql_text; ?????? How do i execute a prepared stmt that is not a cursor?? (sorry, i don't have any manuals around me to look at right now)
