comp.databases.informix.4gl: Tool Update and New Tools - Bug Fix
Posted in 1995
You know how it goes: Just when you think a program is ready for use it STILL has a bug in it. Well, so it goes with yesterday's post. The screen code generators worked fine if you use character fields that never went over 40 characters in length. My testing overlooked this, as it had worked in the past. At any rate, it's fixed. I tested it on about 150 screens today, and no errors. But you never know. :-) NEW Makefile Generator for 4GL 6.0 I figured since I had to report on this bug-fix, I might as well put the makefile generator for 6.0 4GL out there for some public consumption. Now Johnathan has told me this is "ill-advised" to circumvent c4gl. So I'm passing his advice on to you. I'm steadfastly dedicated to MAKE, and not c4gl, so I will probably test my compiles with c4gl for awhile--which is something YOU should do--and then say good-bye to c4gl once I get to safe ground. You can also put c4gl into the make instead of the 4-step Ic4gl calls if you prefer. I may end up doing this if it gets too scary. I feel using a shell-script to manage programs is in the realm of Hokey Wolf. MAKE is something I'm learning more of, and should probably know it better. It really does "make" it simpler to manage programs--pun intended. I realize INFORMIX must make it as easy as possible for the widest possible audience to use their 4GL. But my experience has taught me that most of the folks who really use 4GL are not amateurs, but programmers, who should have as much flexibility as possible. Maybe I'm wrong---this could be the exception. This also comes under the category of diminishing returns as 4GL is in its' sundown years. How much effort is worth it to use make instead of c4gl? Well, you can still use both, or either, and c4gl can be used instead of the method I've set up. There's all kinds of combinations you should try out. Whether or not 4GL is getting close to retirement, I'm still going to try and improve my work environment, and make programming easier. Use the make6mk program at your own risk, but do give it a try. Let me know what you think. You'll find it at my home page , or at emory.edu. It works similar to make_mk, and should be relatively easy to use.
