David Grove (Informix 12.10.FC14, Solaris 10) asked whether RSS primary and secondary need identical logical log configuration. Art Kagel and Paul Watson answered yes: RSS and HDR secondaries are built by restoring a primary backup, so chunks and logs are identical as far as the server knows; underlying storage can be larger but not smaller. Resolved.

Currently using RSS with two identical machines (hardware and software). No problems. Don't have another machine to do a test, so figure why not ask here.
When using RSS, do the primary and secondary need to have identical logical log configurations? That is, do they need to have the same number and size of logs, and must they reside in dbspaces of the same name and size?
Thank you.

Given that the RSS and HDR secondaries are created by restoring an archive from the primary server, yes, the chunks and logs will be identical. At least as far as the server knows. If the underlying physical drive/file/device over which the chunks are defined are larger than their counterparts on the primary, that's fine. They cannot be smaller, obviously, their paths as known to Informix must be the same (though the target of the path if it's a link can be different - one reason why we use links instead of hard device paths), and the offsets and sizes as defined to the server will automatically be the same.

No choice really, RSS/HDR are built from a restore so they are identical
