UltraSparc IV versus UltraSparc T2

Hi All, I have been given a choice of either: SUN V490 with 2 dual core UltraSparc IV processors OR SUN T5220 with a single 4 core UltraSparc T2 processor I am running IDS 9.4.xc4 and am uncertain whether IDS will make full benefit of all 4 cores and threads of the T2. Or would it be more optimal on a greater number of physical processors. At the moment I am leaning towards the older V490 due to number of physical processors but this is very much out of ignorance. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks In advance, Conrad.
Not knowing the full details, it seems most of the "dual-core" or "quad-core" processors (at least from Intel) use shared caches on the chip. Therefore, you could ASSume that - if the processors were the same clock speed - the separate processors with their own cache could be faster, especially if 'AFFINITY' and 'noage' is being used in $ONCONFIG. Only a comparison test could tell for sure. Hi Conrad, Check out the http://www.sun.com pages for longer descriptions, but in brief below. I think you need to consider the type of work load, ie OLTP, short sharp transactions will perform well on the T5220, but longer reporting type transaction won't work well on the T5220 because the single CPU's speed is 1.4GHz, so the general rule is if you have larger percentage of DS queries as opposed to OLTP work, head to towards faster speed CPU's, the V490 will likely be 2Ghz and there are effectively 4 of them. Are these new machines, if yes ask Sun about the try-before-you-buy program and try the T5220, if it's not good give it back and take a V490. Have fun.
