I am tired of messing with Commvault settings and their lame support and docs
etc. The admin dude and I finally got our onbar backups hauling to the tune of
~90 meg per second. Restores are still lame, lagging around 10 meg per second
if we are lucky. Anyhoo - I decided to pay good old ontape a revisit. I set my
TAPESIZE to 0 and my TAPEBLK to 8192 and backed up a small test instance of
ours (less than 20 gig) to a file. I got ~155 meg per second throughput from
the ontape backup and marginally less for the subsequent restore - in short it
kicked the sh%t out of onbar - xbsa - commvault... We have disk space coming
out of our... ...ears and I would be tickled pink to get off Commvault -am I
nutz? Am I a dork to assume that a 155 meg per sec. throughput for 20 gig will
hold for a ~terrabyte size backup? Also I realize that the issue with
throughput may have nothing to do with the tool I use - but by backing up to a
local disk as opposed to a network tape farm dealie ma jig I could be simply
bypassing traffic that ain't there on the home box. That is all.

Are you storing off your logical logs to tape as well or to "virtual tape"
(hard drive partition reserved for logical log storage)?
When onbar first came out, my company backed up everything to tape; when it
came time to restore a backup onto a sandbox server, the logical logs took
forever to restore due to the seek time the storage manager had to go thru
(avg 5 minutes) just to find a file it restored in less than 20 seconds. Try
wading thru 100 logical logs ... yep, forever.
I don't know your situation but if you are backing up logs to tape, use the
disk space you are thinking of using for the backup for the logical logs
instead.
Take care.
