IDS 9.40 32bit/64bit - Backup&Restore question
Posted in 2006
Elena asked whether ontape/onbar backup and restore can move a database from 32-bit IDS 9.40.UC2 to 64-bit 9.40.FC7 on Solaris 8. The consensus: you can't restore a 32-bit backup directly into a 64-bit instance. The recommended route is to restore (or copy the chunks with dd) onto the new machine using the 32-bit binaries, then install the 64-bit binaries, adjust the config and run oninit to upgrade in place — the Migration Guide covers the details. Going 64-bit to 32-bit needs a full unload/reload (dbexport/dbimport, myexport/myimport, or Art Kagel's dbcopy to move data directly between instances).

Hello, I would like to move a database from an IDS 9.40.UC2 towards an IDS 9.40.FC7, on SUN 8 machines. Is possible to do this using the BACKUP & RESTORE utilities? If yes, what I have to prepare on the destination server before starting the database restore? Thank you, Elena
My memory might be foggy, but you don't backup a 9.40.UC (32bit) and restore to a 9.40.FC (64bit). If you also need to move between 2 servers, you would first install the 9.40.UC (32bit) software on new machine. Restore the DB because the backup was done on a 32bit version. Then do an upgrade to the 64bit binaries. It was a few years ago that we did ours, so I might be mistaken. No. You cannot go from 32bit to 64bit using ontape or onbar. You have to
export the data, create a new instance, then import the data. Use
dbexport/dbimport, my replacement utility myexport/myimport which can
optionally
use onpload for the IO and can export/import the tables in parallel so that it
will run faster than dbexport/dbimport can, or your own home grown combination
of dbschema/myschema and onpload to export the schema and data and reimport
them.
Myexport is available for download from the IIUG Software Repository and
requires you to also install:
utils2_ak (by me - specifically my dbschema replacement myschema)
sqlcmd (by Jonathan Leffler - v72.06 or later IB, current is 80.00 -
specifically the sqlreload and sqlunload utilities it includes)
myonpload (a simplified commandline interface to onpload by Ravi Krishna)

Provided both 9.40.UC2 and the planned target 9.40.FC7 are on the
same architecture (i.e. SunOS), you can simply copy all the chunks
from the source to the targhet system (e.g. 'dd' or some more advanced
tool ) or using an imported restore with the 32 bit software.
Then install the 64 bit software in target instance and adapt the
configuration to point to the chunks (if not down already) .
Then simply call 'oninit' - et voila - you are on 64 bit.
Please! consult the IBM Informix Migration Guide for details.
The lines above are a very condensed outline!

Art, are you sure?
back when I did it, I don't recall exporting nearly a terabyte of data
and importing....
I think I just brought DB down, upgraded IDS binaries, brought DB up...
and wala... moments later after internal stuff, IDS was happy.
But like I said, that was several years back and I have slept since then

Norma,
Actually I assumed as you did that they were also porting to a different
machine at the same time, I just did not think of the restore to 32bit then
upgrade option. They can certainly take your suggestion!

Hi Norma Jean,
you're right. :))
That's how it works from 32-bit to 64-bit.
To go back (i.e. from 64-bit to 32-bit) is the hard way.
In that case you would have to do what Art described.
Regards,
Martin

There is another option, and I'm surprised that Art did not suggest it:
dbcopy. This is another very handy little utility that Art wrote, which
you can use to migrate data *directly* from one instance/machine into
another instance/machine, *without* having to go thru flat files. I
have used dbcopy to do this type of migration several times. Dbcopy is
part of Art's utils2_ak package on www.iiug.org.
