Hi, if the connect is initiated with a user and password specified there doesn't have to be any "trust" relationship between client and server. "databaseowner" has to be a valid user on SERVER and the correct password has to be provided (and consequently, there doesn't have to be a user joe on SERVER). Actually, the JDBC manual document states that trust relationships involving .rhosts or /etc/hosts.equiv are not supported with JDBC (as far as I know it does work, though).
