Informix used/uses "file-based" locking for versions of OS's that don't support kernel-based locking or have locking facilities that Informix doesn't trust. This scheme involves using the Unix file system and a companion "*.lok" file for each table in the database. In cases where "trustable" kernel-based locking is added in later OS versions, as happened with SunOS/Solaris, Informix switches to that scheme when they think they can trust it. For any given version of Informix, you have no say as to which method is used -- at least none that I know of. We are currently running SE 5.01.UC1 under SunOS 4.1.3, which uses kernel locking. I forget which version of Informix was the first to use that type of locking for SunOS, but we've had no problems with it. I can't say the same thing for the old file-based locking. Perhaps you should consider upgrading to the latest version of Solaris. Given its checkered past, I'd certainly include it in the list of suspects.
