Going to 7 is well worth the effort since it provides more tools to be
able to pinpoint those "well written" sql statements.
Here is a plan that I created to upgrade from 5 to 7. I highly recommend
it since dbimport may come back with constraint problems if you try to
reinitialize and dump the 5 data into 7.
1. Run your tbchecks!
2. Make backups!!!! tbtape, tbunload, dbexport
3. Drop all indexes and constraints (at the very least, the ones on your
large tables)
4. Bring down online (tbmode -ky)
5. Install version 7 (preferrably in a different directory: For example:
version 5 is in /usr/informix5 and version 7 is in /usr/informix)
6. Change onconfig file (set #logs > 5)
Change sqlhosts
Change env. variables: onconfig, informixserver
7. Bring online into quiescent mode (oninit -s)
Check onstat -m for errors,
wait until sysmaster is built
8. Bring online into online mode (oninit -m)
9. Perform UPDATE STATISTICS
This converts the existing indexes
10. Create indexes and constraints that were previously dropped
11. Run another UPDATE STATISTICS to tell the optomizer about the new
indexes
12. Run your backups for version 7.
THAT'S IT!!!! Any questions or problems, feel free to contact me!
Hope it helps.
