Just in case it is applicable to your case : If any of the column in the concatenation is NULL, the complete string returned will be set to NULL. For example, in the stmt "select hipr.last_name||first_name[1,1]||middle_name[1,1]||birthdate", if any of last_name, first_name, middle_name or birthdate is null for a row, a NULL will be returned for the row.
