WOW, can't believe how slow iiug.org website is!
Posted in 2012
A user complained that the iiug.org web forum was taking several seconds per page load and sometimes erroring on posts, and asked whether the database needed a reorg. Art Kagel of the IIUG board explained the cause is simply the old, heavily loaded server hosting the site, and that the board is working on replacement hardware; no tuning or reorg fix was offered, and email/gateway delivery was shown to be fast (under two minutes). Others suggested alternative Informix sites. The original poster later reported the site seemed about twice as fast, but no actual change was confirmed.

It's taking several seconds for postings, returning to index, etc. It seems like some maintenance is needed for iiug.org I'm using Firefox browser and all other links pop up instantly, so I know its not my box, network or other.. Who maintains iiug.org?.. Maybe its databse is so loaded up with postings that the tables need to be reorg'd, or other issues?
they must be uploading my presentations.... ;-) From: "FRANK J. The machine is ancient and running nearly flat out sometimes. The IIUG Board is working on replacement server upgrades, it just takes time. Art Art S. IMHO, I feel this website is the most important for Informix related topics and perhaps should be funded by IBM so that it can be properly function!
Well, it *is* running on an old 3B2 after all. Do be fair. ----- Original Message ----- From: FRANK J. Like in AT&T 3B2/300? I doubt it!.. In 1988, I ported an AT&T Payroll app, developed with INFORMIX-SQL on a crawling 3B20, to INFORMIX-SQL running on an Amdahl 390/UTS mainframe. The performance gain still astonishes me to this date!
Hey, don't make fun of the old 3B2's. AT&T ran commercial long lines billing on a 3B2 running the original Informix Turbo for years. Did some work on that system in '90. Well the IIUG system's not that decrepit, but close. But it's running Informix so it just keeps on ticking! Art Art S. Actually, the 3B20 was the first of the 3B series computers made and was used for controlling Central Office telephone switches. When I left RCA in 1984, I went to work as a Product Planner for AT&T-IS Labs, Summit NJ in UNIX Product Mgmt., headed by Larry Rosler. Our RDBMS group evaluated Informix-SQL, 4GL 1.0 and other brands. UNIX SVR2 wasn't exactly spiffy on the 3B2's or 3B5's, but acceptable on the 3B20's. Then we all got laid off in 1987 when AT&T decided to quit selling commercial hardware. So then I became an Altos VAR in Florida.
.. forgot to ask, what hardware/OS/IDS is iiug running on?.. I wouldn't imagine there are many concurrent users accessing iiug?.. Have the table sizes grown large? Besides new hardware, would a database reorg help? .. I would imagine that the forum posts are fragmented?.. Seems like IDS and Classics Forums are the busiest.
They are many better resources site for informix www.informix-zone.com being one of them Personally I use http://www.informixchina.net/ and google translator Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of FRANK J. You know what, it's not so slow! I just posted a message to this board via the email gateway and it was posted here and emailed out to gateway users within two minutes! I'm posting this response via the web interface at 11:11AM on my laptop clock let's see how long it takes to show up and get emailed out. Art
I saw it at 10:12am, CDT. --EEM >-----Original Message----- >From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of >ART KAGEL >Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2012 10:11 AM >To: ids@iiug.org >Subject: Re: WOW, can't believe how slow iiug.org websi.... Showed up in the online index immediately and in my email in a bit over a minute. OK, the web page refresh was a bit slow, we are aware of that and the only way to fix it will be a new system. Art, I'm not implying that it's crawling, but within the last couple of months, something must have happened because its taking an average of 4 to 5 seconds to retrieve a post or return to the index. Logging in is quick, but posting a response or a new post sometimes takes 15 seconds or more, sometimes generating an error message. How large are the tables that contain the posts?.. Has re-indexing or the tables been reorg'd?.. What is the hardware/software configuration?
Would changing my Forum Preferences help?.. My current settings for IDS Forum is: 1. Show last 6 months postings. 2. Threaded list. 3. Single display. 4. Mixed sort order.
I don't know. I haven't played with it. Honestly, I don't use the online forum tool 'cause I also monitor the old Usenet group and Informix groups on Linked-In and Facebook so it only makes sense for me to have everything funnel into my email account and handle it from one interface. Well, iiug.org performance has improved, its now twice as fast!.. Art Kagel must've tweaked it?
