Re: Configure IDS 11.50 to avoid sorts going d....
Posted in 2012
The original question was how to stop sorts and other temporary operations in IDS 11.50 from spilling to scratch files in $INFORMIXDIR/tmp and keep them in memory. Art Kagel pointed to the ONCONFIG parameter for non-PDQ query memory (settable from 128KB up to 25% of DS_TOTAL_MEMORY) plus the DBUPSPACE environment variable for in-memory sorting. A follow-up poster couldn't find it in the Info Center because the name had been mistyped; the correct spelling, DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM, was confirmed from onconfig.std and the manuals. The rest of the thread is a side debate about Info Center search versus downloading the PDF documentation sets.

Search something smaller.
Like the onconifg.std that came with the 11.50 engine you have installed.
( they group items and also give definitions and other information in the
onconifg file itself )
You will find the proper spelling there I believe its something like one of
these below.:
more onconifg.std
###################################################################
# Parallel Database Query (PDQ) Configuration Parameters
###################################################################
# MAX_PDQPRIORITY - The maximum amount of resources, as a
# percentage, that PDQ can allocate to any
# one decision support query
# DS_MAX_QUERIES - The maximum number of concurrent decision
# support queries
# DS_TOTAL_MEMORY - The maximum amount, in KB, of decision
# support query memory
# DS_MAX_SCANS - The maximum number of concurrent decision
# support scans
# DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM - The amount of non-PDQ query memory, in KB.
# Acceptable values are 128 to 25% of
# DS_TOTAL_MEMORY.
# DATASKIP - Specifies whether to skip dbspaces when
# processing a query. Acceptable values are:
# - ALL Skip all unavailable fragments
# - ON <dbspace1> <dbspace2>... Skip listed
# dbspaces
# - OFF Do not skip dbspaces (default)
###################################################################
MAX_PDQPRIORITY 100
DS_MAX_QUERIES
DS_TOTAL_MEMORY
DS_MAX_SCANS 1048576
DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM 128
DATASKIP
I hope the colors come out on your screen.

The info center is almost worthless. Download the PDF manuals from here. This is the documentation set home page for 11.50: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27010058#DocSets This is the direct link to the download page for the 11.50.xC9 PDF documentation set: http://www-05.ibm.com/e-business/linkweb/publications/servlet/pbi.wss?CTY=US&FNC =SRX&PBL=SC11-7740-02 They recently made it even harder than it already was to find these doc sets <sigh> I'll bring that up with IBM later this week. I know I can be acuse of being subjective, but let me disagree with that: The search function in Information center works well and It's helpul in many situations. The OP was searching for a non existing parameter. If he had followed the advice from another poster he would have found it (just like I did). As for the PDF sets, I'm also a big fan and it's probably the second thing I put on any PC after the OS... In order to get them I need 3 clicks and this has been so for very long time: Click 1: access the InfoCenter for the version I'm looking for Click 2: access the link that says "Download PDF documentation" (send me to a new page) Click 3: Click on the right version Then yes... a couple more clicks to select HTTP download and to accept the terms.... so... 5 clicks! For thos of us who spend most of the time with the manuals open, the PDFs are great, because you'll end up knowing where to look for what you need (every parameter is in a list on Admin Ref, every SQL command is in a list on the SQL syntax guide etc... But sometimes I really need the search facility and for that I prefer the Infocenter. Having said that, If anyone wants to pick on IBM, I was recently asked why don't we provide the Redbooks (and why not the documentation sets) on Mobi (Kindle) and/or ePub formats? Thanks Fernando and Art and George !
Declare: It was not my fault for the wrong spelling ( did a copy paste
:-( )
Must admit , not a easy thing to write the parameter name correctly :-)
DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEMNo matter how slow the IBM IDS Info-center will be, we really need it
quite frequently!

I'm sorry Fernando, but I'm not the only one. I had this discussion in San Diego with the manager of the Documentation team and it was acknowledged that the complaints I have are common themes expressed to support and directly to them. I know they are working on this and hopefully it will improve. Meanwhile, today, searching the Info Center doesn't find what you need more than half of the time and when it does the information is spread across several pages with no <back>, <next> or <prev> buttons. The related topics buttons are also too often unrelated. Sometimes the list of related search items on the left side gets me what I want, but ultimately, I am always sorry that I didn't start with the PDFs which I have on both my laptops and on my Linux box (even have the Guide to SQL Syntax on my Android phone). If the OP had used the PDF manuals, he would have seen the not-exactly-spelled-the-way-he-expected onconfig parameter in the TOC listing at the left of the PDF or in the Index at the end. Instead he was lost. Art Art S. I would agree - the info center works well, unless you are in Chrome :-) -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Fernando Nunes Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2012 5:02 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Configure IDS 11.50 to avoid sorts going d.... [27063] I know I can be acuse of being subjective, but let me disagree with that: The search function in Information center works well and It's helpul in many situations. Folks,
IDS11.50 FC8
I updated the configuration parameter as following,
#DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM 128
DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM 4096
When I bounced my instance, it showed,
[informix@franklin etc]$ oninit
DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM recalculated and changed from 4096Kb to 128Kb
Why it said from 4096Kb to 128Kb ? It should say, from 128Kb to 4096Kb!
The next question.
I set the PDQPRIORITY TO 0, and run a SQL with a Order By ( 30 rows
output), it still needs a Temporary file created for the sorting, why?
See attached.
Thanks,
Frank

What is DS_TOTAL_MEMORY set to? DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM is limited to 25% of
DS_TOTAL_MEMORY.
As to your sqexplain.out output, it will always say "Temporary Files
Required For: Order By" because the results of the sort will be a temp
table whether the sort-work files are written to disk are only to memory.

The DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM has to be less than 25% (or thereabouts) of the
total PDQ query memory - or something similar. I assume that the other
parameter was too small and therefore the server reset the value.
Look in the manual; it should be documented.

Thanks, Art and Jonathan!
After reset the DS_TOTAL_MEMORY to a bigger value, the confuse message is
gone.
But, The following still there,
Temporary Files Required For: Order By
How can we check and verify there is no temporary table created in disk
for the sorting ?
Thanks

Keep the session open and look in the syssesprof table for the number of
disksorts versus totalsorts.
