dbexport limit
Posted in 2000
A user couldn't dbexport tables larger than 2GB, getting a misleading "disk full" error despite free space. Replies explained that dbexport writes one .unl file per table and hits a 2GB file-size ceiling; contributors disagreed over whether this is an Informix-imposed limit or an OS/filesystem/ulimit restriction (one suggested raising ulimit, which is often not unlimited for non-root users). The practical workaround offered was to use Art Kagel's myexport (and load/unload) utilities from the IIUG software repository, which are dbexport-compatible and support large files where the OS does.

Hi everybody!
Somebody knows if the dbexport have a limit by table ?
I tried did dbexport but i cant unload tables with more 2GB . Why?
I receive system message : Maybe Disk Full, but i have 4GB free
space.
Thanks

2GB is the file size limit in Informix. Others might say that this is
an OS limit but it really is an Informix limit.

Before you buy.
Are you exporting to disk or to tape? If disk, what is the file-size limit
on the filesystem you are exporting to? Which system error message did you
receive?

Hi,
use Art's load/unload utility from www.iiug.org.

Some systems have a limit of the size of the file written to disk, that is
your falsedisk full.

dbexport has a built in limit of 2GB for each file it creates. For each
table, dbexport creates a .unl file. This limit isn't so much an Informix
limitation but a unix limitation at files being no larger than 2GB. There are
ways around that, but that's another issue not so much related to Informix as
it is to Unix.

Specifically you will probably not be running dbexport as 'root', so
will be subject to whatever ulimit is set to unless you take steps to
override it to be unlimited.

My dbexport replacement utility, myexport, is completely compatible with
dbexport and does not have any hard limits. If you OS supports large files
so does myexport. Myexport is available from the IIUG Software Repository
in the package myexport.shar. Note a new version was uploaded this week.

I don't agree with you. It IS an Informix limit, not a UNIX limit. Hence
with most versions of IDS the 2GByte limit is present even if files >2GBytes
are permitted by the OS.
