Re: Apache Web Server to Informix

Steve
I use Apache Web Server here to run my Web Page on an Intranet. I have
an Informix database on the backend. I use CGI calls using GET and
POST to Perl scripts which call the Informix dbaccess utility and
start reading the resulting array from the 4th position. So far it has
held up well, although the traffic at my site is not that heavy - I
use it to automate certain database services (like service requests,
service status and schema information) for my development team.
I have also used ESQL/C standalone programs that get called from the
Perl scripts to insert data into the database and return the serial id
inserted to the Perl script which in turn sends it to a CGI generated
web page.
My queries to the database are typically not persistent. When they are
I accomplish the persistence by indirecting from another page which
contains the persistent data. It may be preferable for you to have
persistent connections to the database, in that case I would recommend
using DBD::Informix. Using ESQL/C with the CGI-Webkit (never used it
though) may also be an option for you. Also I think your site will
have heavier traffic than mine (going by your address I assume it is
for stock/fund quotes) so opening a database connection for each query
may be resource intensive.
Just my $ 0.02 worth...

We currently run an Apache Web Server on our Sequent. Upto now we use
the web server to display static pages on our intranet. We would like to
have the web server connect to our Informix engine. The Informix WIO (Web
Intergration Option) is not available on our current platform. What other
choices are there for connecting the web server to Infomrix?
I am aware of the:
Perl, DBI, DBD::Informix method.
Does anyone have any experience using this? Stability, Performance,
Support? Does anyone use this in a production 24x7 environment?
Platform: Sequent SE80 - 16cpu - Dynix 4.1
Informix: 7.13.UC2X1
