Hi Maria, >The documentation is driving me nuts.....so I am asking for your advice. >I am looking for some general guidelines for allocating >partitions/chunks/dbspaces. I have read the doc's and the information >is so scattered across manuals it is very difficult to determine a good >strategy. I sympathize with you, it can be a very complicated topic. Carlton Doe's new book, "Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server Handbook", says: "The process of taking disk drives, dividing them into chunks, and then creating dbspaces populated with tables is two parts science and three parts trial and error." >I obviously want to mirror my rootdbs, phy.logs and log.logs. Would a >separate dbspace for each database be advantageous? Should my dbspaces >be located on specific chunks or disk drives? How should chunks be >associated with partitions? I recommend doing two things that should make the answers easy: 1) Draw a Picture 2) K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) Find a big whiteboard and draw every level of your architecture. Include the physical disk drives, the hardware controllers, drive partitions, chunks, dbspaces, and table layout. (With that picture, it will be clear to you that no matter how you slice it, all your I/O is going to come from two drives.) Then, when the drawing starts to get really complicated, remember KISS. If you can't understand how it is laid out, your replacement will never be able to. (Let alone the poor Informix support engineer who has to dial in and fix that mess.) The bottom line is that all those fancy ways of shuffling those parts of disk around are nice, but your system must be understandable first. And that is entirely within your means.
