Figured I would post my guesses and see if it brought any comments.
My answer just comes from playing with onstat -g ntm and
connecting to the server and running queries and watching what
happens.
It looks like the mailbox is what is used to manage clients connecting
and disconnecting. the only times I have seen received go up for a mailbox
is when I connect to or disconnect from a database.
