Demo database not created installing IDS 10 on Linux
Posted in 2005
A user installed IDS 10 on Linux with ./installserver -gui and was never prompted to create the documented demo database/instance. Replies pointed out that the stores_demo database is created afterwards by running $INFORMIXDIR/bin/dbaccessdemo and then dbaccess stores_demo. An IBM developer explained that the automatic "create demo instance" prompt only appears in the bundled product installed via the ids_install script. The poster confirmed his download only contained installserver, so he had to configure an instance manually.

Hi all, Anyone know if there is a special procedure when installing IDS 10 for create the demo database? In the installation guide it is mentioned that a demo database gets created for testing purposes. I succesfully installed IDS 10 as root with: ./installserver -gui But in no point I were asked if wanted a demo database to get installed. I read that in some point (command mode installation) I get asked if want a demo database but in the gui mode installation that question does not appear. I also read that there is a configuration option that states if the demo database gets created or not... but I assume this option is used when installing IDS in silent or legacy mode. Or not? Thanks for any hint. J. Jean Sagi jeansagi@myrealbox.com jeansagi@yahoo.com
Have you tried executing dbaccessdemo command?. That script should be in $INFORMIXDIR/bin. -----Original Message----- From: forum.subscriber@iiug.org [mailto:forum.subscriber@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Jean Sagi Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 11:13 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Demo database not created installing IDS 10 on Linux [4696] Hi all, Anyone know if there is a special procedure when installing IDS 10 for create the demo database? Umm... I was doing a bad question.
In my documentation 1-20 (Spanish) it states that if I decided to configure a
demo of IDS then the configuration automatically does it.
So I presume what the installation does is to configure an instance wich is
supposed to be named "demo_on" which is parametrized with onconfig.demo. This
way the databases sysmaster, sysutils and ... the other one gets created...
But anything of this happened when I used the gui installation.
I surely won't have a demo database but for what I read I should have a
configured instace with the system databases created on them.
This migth be similar to the windows installation (that I did) when you are
asked where o put the database files, if they are mirrored etc.
I'll try the command line mode, and to modify some ini's to see what happen.

Maybe you just haven't gone quite far enough? In the Installation guide,
there is a section on page 1-19 that talks about testing the installation.
It says to run two commands:
dbaccessdemo
dbaccess stores_demo
These are the same steps commands that are described in the DB-Access User's
Guide for creating a demonstration database. (Section 1 of the DB-Access
Guide discusses this, and the examples of using those commands appears on
page 1-9.)
I haven't done an installation myself yet, so it is a guess, but I hope this
helps.

Hi Jean,
Are you installing the so called "bundle" product ?
Only this version will ask and setup the demo instance you are looking
for...
You should be installing using the ids_install script.
during the installation you will see the following question:
Would you like to create an IDS demo instance?
[ ] 1 - Create Demo
[X] 2 - Do Not Create Demo
To select an item enter its number, or 0 when you are finished: [0] Later
in the installation you will get the following question
I hope this helps

Well I
figure that I haven't the "bundle".
I'm trying to install the IDS demo downloaded from IBM site.
When I decompress the .tar I only get a installserver script not a ids_install.
So I think that I have to configure an instance as usual.
BTW the silent install really rocks!
