Not necessarily. I have setup a cluster on IBM and more recently on DEC using just IDS. When I say _I_ set them up, the trick is to let the OS do all the work, and hence the Sys Adm. ;-) It depends on the cluster architecture you go for and what you are trying to do. XPS relies on a shared nothing architecture, but if you want a simpler solution, then two machines that share disks is a lot easier. You just need to write scripts to fire up IDS on the second box and take over the chunks. It's very impressive when it works.
