IDS - DSS version
Posted in 2004
Poster asked whether IBM sells a pricier "DSS" edition of IDS with decision-support extras like bitmap indexes, having heard this from an ex-Informix employee, noting IBM's site lists no such product. Respondents (Leffler, Kagel, Nunes) said no such IDS-based DSS edition exists: bitmap indexes come only with XPS (or a hand-written secondary access method in IDS 9.x), and other candidates are Red Brick, the old "IDS with AD option" (effectively XPS), or the cancelled Arrowhead project. No definitive confirmation of the claimed product was reached.

I came to know thru someone that Informix has a DSS version of IDS which is even more expensive than IDS enterprise version. It has some DSS-only features like bitmap indexes etc. HoweverIBM site does not mention any such server.

XPS is the only Informix release that supports bitmap indexes unless you want to write the secondary access method yourself for IDS 9.xx. I am aware of no secret or even unpublished DSS release. But it has nothing to do with Informix IDS... There is no product based on IDS code base dedicated to DSS... Unless someone has a secret project ;) Redbrick engine was one of the products of Redbrick a company Informix acquired before being bought by IBM... It probably has bitmap index, and it has a (AFAIK) unique "star index". It's a product dedicated to DW... using star schema / snow flake... You can get more info about it on the site. Regards.

However the person who told me insists that it is IDS with DSS option. No XPS. No RedBrick etc. He specifically referred to bitmap index as one of the features in IDS-DSS,but not in regular IDS. Had he not been an ex-Informix employee, I would not have taken him seriously.

It's a pretty good secret if it exists -- I haven't even heard a rumour of it existing! I discount the Arrowhead work which stopped when IBM took over Informix - that might have fitted the bill, being based on XPS. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/

AD was something like Advanced Decision. But this is XPS as far as I know.. How long ago did he leave Informix? I don't recall when it stopped being called that... Maybe Jonhatan remembers... But currently I don't know anything similar to this... And I can't figure out why this should exist... having XPS and IDS is enough (if not more than enough) Regards.
