The changes between 5.2 and 7.1 are more in the way of arctitecture
than in utilities. 7.1 uses Multi-Threaded architecture, which in
real terms means that it's use of the operating system is more
efficient.
- Commands are now called 'on....' rather than 'tb...'
- New backup and restore mechanism (mentioned below)
- Can no longer do backups from 'tbmonitor' have to run a command
'ontape' or 'onarchive'.
- Can dynamically add processes to give OnLine more resource, without
shutting down the engine.
- DBIMPORT/DBEXPORT now have a 'server specific' option which
includes extent sizes and locking mode.
- A new database called 'sysmaster' enables you to access most of
what's going on in shared memory using SQL (this I have found useful
to write a SQL process which warns when the log files are close to
full).
- There a loads of extensions to 'tbstat' (or 'onstat' as it is now
called) due to the changes in architecture- although a lot of them
confuse the hell out of me!
- OnLine 7.1 is a network product - you do not have to buy I-Star as
well.
- Visual performance monitoring tool called 'onperf' - which I can't
really comment on because it is not supported on my platform (SCO
UNIX).
- Parallel sorting/reading etc.
and more...
>Does dbload support binary source data yet?
I believe so, but haven't actually used it. 'dbexport' and 'unload'
do.

Yes, OnLine 7.1 has the facility to do concurrent, backups and
restores of separate dbspaces. This is done using a new utility
called OnArchive and can also be scheduled to run unattended.
