Re: behaviour of ontape
Posted in 2006
Hi,
a normal checkpoint (i.e. not fuzzy checkpoint) is done for
the archive. This is then the so-called archive checkpoint.
You can later see this data in the "archive root reserved
pages" (at the end of output from "oncheck -pr").
"The time the the backup started could reflect the last checkpoint
before the backup started."
I'm not so sure about this. I thought, that the archive checkpoint is
always done. But there may be the case where there was no
activity since the last checkpoint and the time the archive is started.
In that case an archive checkpoint may not be strictly necessary.
If in such a case no explicit archive checkpoint is done for the
archive, but the last checkpoint is used instead, then the
reference time for the archive would be the time from the last
checkpoint
That is the only case where I can imagine such a scenario.
You probably can test/verify this yourself ...
ontape puts the existing log records from the current log onto
the tape. Therefore it says it contains that current log. The log
does not need to be full, nor will ontape enforce a log switch.
This is also information for the user (i.e. administrator) that
previous log files (backed up on tape) are no longer needed
to restore this (new) level-0 archive.
Regards,
Martin
