At my last assignment we implemented Patrol on several of our key
servers. The Informix Knowledge Module for Patrol was initially
ineffective, but after some work with the BMC engineers we were able to
get it working fairly well. Subsequent releases have included these
fixes and the current KM is much better.
I liked the ability to customize Patrol behavior, knowing that Patrol
would call me before an angry user, and the ability to see trending
information on the parameters tracked (physical log, physical / logical
buffer, read ahead, etc.) rather than just a snapshot from onstat.
Seeing the trends really helped in tuning. I'd have to recommend it.
I've never liked onprobe/oncockpit, they always seemed like a good idea
that never quite came to fruition. I've come to trust Informix for the
engines, but not the tools.
