dbexport & dbschema were after the version you are using.
Things to check & try:
1) UNIX permissions on the .dbs directory & it's contents - to get
at the stuff set to 777/666, or create a new database and copy how that
is set up.
2) Run bcheck -S (I think) on all the .idx files in the directory -
that will move the .idx to .IDX and rebuild the .idx so long as it can
get the information out of the system catalogues, so do it on sys*.idx
first. If there are corruptions in the indexes that should sort them.

We'd pretty much established that -- thanks for the confirmation.

I got the data and ran SE 5.08.UD1 on Solaris against it. All the data
types were portable (no FLOAT or SMALLFLOAT columns), so I've dbexport'd
it and sent that back to Matteo -- overflowed one mail box but the
remainder seems to have fitted in another.
Since 5.08 could work OK, I don't know what was wrong with Matteo's
setup, but there was definitely something up. The only weirdness I
encountered was that when I first ran 5.08 against the data, it failed
to add syssyntable; simply running it a second time added the table OK.
I've no idea what that was about.
